CAP round planning
Each CAP round changes the option-form problem
The same list strategy should not be used blindly across all CAP rounds. Round 1 is about reach and coverage, Round 2 is about betterment and cleanup, and Round 3 is about final risk control.
Round 1 needs breadth
A narrow list can miss acceptable options, so build enough Dream, Match, and Safe coverage before the first allotment.
Round 2 needs intent
After an allotment, keep only choices that improve the student's situation or remain acceptable backups.
Round 3 needs discipline
Final-round choices should be options the student is prepared to accept under the official rules and deadlines.
Before every CAP round option form
Use this review whenever the official portal allows fresh choice filling or reordering.
Know the current status
Start from the student's latest allotment, acceptance status, and official eligibility for the next round.
Recheck the cutoff band
A branch that was Dream earlier may become Match later if seats move; a backup can also become risky.
Remove unacceptable choices
Do not keep a college or branch that the student will refuse after allotment.
Preserve better choices above backups
Backups protect conversion, but they should not sit above preferred realistic options.
Strategy
How to plan across rounds
Use the general CAP round option-form page as the hub, then switch to the round-specific guide for the exact round you are preparing.
- Round 1: build a broad, preference-first list.
- Round 2: reorder for genuine betterment after seeing Round 1 outcome.
- Round 3: keep risk low and remove choices that create regret.
