JoSAA Strategy Guide
JoSAA Restrictions & Program Eligibility
Some programs have extra tests, subject requirements, or medical/PwD restrictions. Add them only if you qualify.
Golden rule
If you are not eligible for a program, do not keep it in your list. Invalid options waste preference slots and decision bandwidth.
How restrictions work
- JoSAA publishes program-level restrictions for IIT and NIT+ programs.
- Restrictions can be tied to program type, institute policy, or medical/subject criteria.
- The same restriction pattern repeats across many programs, so validate early.
Common restriction types (quick scan)
- Extra qualification/test required (for example AAT for Architecture, UCEED for some Design routes).
- Medical/vision restrictions in selected programs (for example color blindness / one-eyed vision).
- PwD ineligibility in specific programs (commonly seen in some Mining tracks).
- Subject prerequisites in Class XII (for example Biology requirements in selected Life Science programs).
- Program-specific compliance notes published by institutes.
Real examples
- IIT Kharagpur - Mining: PwD and vision-based constraints may apply.
- IIT Kharagpur / IIT Roorkee - Architecture: AAT-linked eligibility gate.
- IIT Delhi - B.Tech Design: UCEED-linked eligibility gate.
- NIT Life Science tracks: subject prerequisites such as Biology may apply.
Before adding any choice (fast checklist)
- Check if this program needs AAT/UCEED/extra qualification.
- Check PwD/vision/medical restrictions for this exact program.
- Check Class XII subject prerequisites for this exact program.
- If unsure, move it lower and verify from official restrictions before final lock.
The Trap
You add a restricted program without validating test/subject/medical criteria. During verification, option becomes invalid and your list loses effective slots.
The Smart Way
Run a restriction scan on shortlisted options first, then finalize preference order.
Round decision checklist (printable)
- Check current round deadlines for choice locking, fee payment, and reporting.
- Re-verify State of Eligibility, category, and PwD claims before final lock.
- Remove any program where your eligibility remains unverified.
- Save PDF/screenshot proof of choices and willingness action.
Print tip: use Ctrl/Cmd + P before each round deadline.
Documents to keep ready before each round
- JEE scorecard and JoSAA registration details
- Class XII marksheet and State of Eligibility basis document
- Category/EWS/PwD certificates in prescribed valid format
- Photo ID, seat acceptance receipt, and prior round acknowledgements
